The Benefits of Dog Training

Interacting with a pet dog can be an enjoyable experience.  The time spent with the dog can be even more relaxing if there has been proper dog training.  Without dog obedience training, the dog may do natural, impulsive behaviors that can be stressful for their owners.  Dog obedience training teaches the dog to follow commands and can eliminate problem behaviors.

Many dog owners are uncertain of how to train a dog.  The dog training does not need to cause anxiety for the dog owner.  The training of the dog can be a fun experience for both the owner and the dog.  Resisting any impulses to become angry or frustrated with the dog can be difficult if the dog does not seem to be learning the commands.  If the dog is becoming uneasy or the owner is getting impatient, the training session should be ended until a later time.

Those who want to learn how to train dogs can attend an obedience class with the dog or read about the subject.  There are several different methods for training dogs.  Clicker training is a popular method that uses a click sound as a signal that the dog has correctly followed the command.  In addition to using the clicker device, the trainer might use praise and dog treats to reward obedience.

Dogs often need leash training to eliminate behaviors like barking at strangers and pulling the person holding the leash.  Since dogs are pack animals, a common problem is for a dog to try to assert dominance over family members.  A leash can be used by that person to show the dog that the dog is not dominant.

Leashes can be used to train dogs to follow other commands by physically forcing the dog to comply with the given command.  Dog experts typically prefer to use methods like rewarding positive behavior rather than resorting to the use of a collar or leash to force the dog to obey during a training session.  However, there are many appropriate situations in which to use a leash as a training tool such as when the dog is learning not to jump on guests or pull the person walking the dog.

Socializing the dog is an important component of training dogs.  If the dog is not regularly exposed to people who are not part of the household, the dog can become fearful and develop problem behavior like excessive barking and biting.  The socialization of the dog should start as early as possible.  Puppies can be taken for walks in public areas that allow dogs so that they are exposed to people.  For closer interactions, the dog owner should periodically invite people to visit.

Training is helpful not only for eliminating problems but also for preventing them.  When the dog owner trains the dog, the dog owner is investing time and energy in the dog.  Teaching the dog to follow commands can be rewarding by fostering a close relationship with the dog and lowering the risk of dog behavior problems.
