Where to park car near Central Park for a trip with my dog?

I live in New Jersey. I would like to take my dog to Central Park. I haven’t driven in Manhattan in almost ten years because the train is so much easier, but with a dog that won’t be an option. Where’s a good place to park near Central Park?

I know that covers a lot of ground; I don’t really care what part of the park though. Most important is that the garage/lot has a good chance of weekday availability and won’t cost $40 for all-day parking like the big garages near Columbus Circle do. SE corner might be nice so we can go visit the statue of Balto but that’s optional.

Last thing is, I’m happy to walk some from the garage to the park, but super-crowded main streets packed with either tourists or commuters aren’t ideal, just for maneuvering around with a big excited happy dog!

Help me out, New Yorkers, and I promise to clean up every molecule of poop my doggie attempts to leave behind in your lovely city. Thanks!

You would be best off to seek the residental side streets off Central Park West (say West 72nd Street and up into the West 80s near the Museum of Natural History) and Columbus Ave. The corner of West 72nd and CPW is near the Strawberry Fields entrance. If you find a spot, it’s free – good luck!!
