How did you Train Your Dog to come?
There are so many different ways To Train A Dog, all people and their dogs are different. I know of some people who train all of their dogs differently while some like all of their dogs to use the same commands (like me). Only not!!
My JRT has just not caught on the recall, I don’t know why, all of my others dogs are doing great. Sometimes she is spot on and turns around and comes running back, other times, she has no clue.
Legit- Why is your dogs recall and how did you train your dog to come to it?
I trained my dog by only using the command inside or when she was on leash outside (even in the yard) so that I could make sure she was successful every time. I said Come in a very happy voice, smiled big, and encouraged her to come to me. If she didn’t, I ran away from her to get her to chase me. Once she got to me, she got tons of praise, some butt scratches, and several treats (cheese, carrots – her fave, freeze-dried liver, etc.) or a chance to play fetch. Once she was very reliable I would practice in the yard without the leash.
Use whatever your dog loves most as a reward. Most JRTs I know can’t resist the chance to chase a ball or play tug. If that’s the case with your dog, use those instead of treats to teach the recall.
And, if she really does blow you off frequently, you might want to start from scratch and use a new cue. She already associates “come” with “go to mom when I feel like it.” Perhaps use “here” or “to me” instead.
