Top Dog Training
I am interested in training my dog in the sport of schutzhund.?
Can anyone suggest a top notch trainer in Connecticut?
While I can’t personally recommend a trainer in your area, I can give you some advice on how to go about finding a club to train with.
First, check with the Doberman Pinscher Club, as Dobermans are one of the handful of breeds approved for the recently approved working dog sport with the AKC. While the AKC trials for your breed are only held at Doberman Specialty events held by the parent club, they may be able to refer you to others in your area training their dobes for schutzhund, and you may be happier training with others that are working with your breed.
Outside of the AKC, there are other clubs that you can title and Train Your Dog through. Check the US Schutzhund club list for GSD clubs in your area. While some clubs are for GSDs only, many clubs have multiple breeds that train with them. For instance the Maine Shutzhund Club has members with Terv’s and Bouv’s, in addition to GSDs. You should also check out DVG, which is an all breed schutzhund club, and USRC, a rottweiler club. There is also the ARV, but their recently rebuilt website does not include a list of clubs yet.
Be prepared to travel some distance to find a good club that you are comfortable training with. Some may use methods you may not feel comfortable with. It is important to choose your trainer and club carefully, because an inexperienced trainer or helper can seriously screw up your dog. Most of us have to live with the dogs we train, and the dogs must be able to be family members first and foremost, and functional members of society. Some trainers use methods that can turn a dog into a walking liability, so selecting a trainer is not a decision you should make lightly.
Also, I caution you that Schutzhund is not a casual sport that you train for a few months and can call it quits. Ask anyone who trains for Schutzhund and they will tell you, it is a way of life. Most train on a daily basis, and train with their club 2-3 times a week. It is a huge commitment of time and effort to properly train your dog, and schutzhund is not training that you can accomplish in a short time.
Both your and your dog must have the “right stuff” to train for schutzhund. Typically dogs that are not bred on established working lines are not going to have the correct nerve strength or drives to successfully train them for the sport. Often people who are new to the sport are only interested in training for bite work, which is not what schutzhund is all about. I don’t know of any club that will consider allowing anyone to train with them that does not have a desire and willingness to do the obedience and tracking work along with the protection work.
Also consider that many homeowners insurance companies will no longer insure you if your dog has been trained for any kind of protection work. Just an FYI.
If you go into the sport with the proper motivation and are able to make the investment of time and effort, you will find few sports as rewarding as schutzhund. Good luck!
